I am doing something different from my usual political rants on my blog. I right now was reading about the new restaurant featuring biscuits and potpies and my reaction was rater indifferent and maybe disgust. I am realizing I start to be burned out on the dining scene in Portland.
One reason I am spending too much money but another reason is my issue with restaurant trends after the big avocado toast controversy. What I am seeing is less unique inspiration and more food just best cooked at home.
First, there is Street food fad. A chef goes to Asia, takes street food that is rustic, simple, and most important cheep, then charge $15.00 for a six-dollar plate of noodles. Another is chef goes to Mexico, get inspired and open a taqueria and change $3.00 for a taco and $10+ for a burrito. I also sick of slapping street food to a name of a mundane restaurant.
Second offender is comfort food. I am look at you Mothers Restaurant and Pine Street biscuits. I am not paying $5.00 for a biscuit sandwich and $18.00 for fried chicken. I can less you are a world redound chef. There are foods that are best done at home and for less money. I been thing about my Hot Pot buffet jaunts like Little Sheep, perhaps it better for me to go to Ranch 99 spend $15.00 for hot pot ingredients, pull out by electric burner, do it at home for less, and have plenty of leftovers for a Hot Pot lunch the next day.
It not I going to stop dining out like at Pizza, Middle Eastern, Taste of Sichuan and Chennai Masala, but it got to take something unique and special to draw me out of my home to eat out.
